There is a time to speak up and a time to be quiet. We can adopt a general rule of restricting our speech and thinking process during certain periods such as:

  1. When anger takes over
  2. When we are jealous
  3. When we are envious
  4. When fatigued
  5. When greedy
  6. When disturbed
  7. When emotional
  8. When in grief
  9. When upset
  10. When unwell
  11. When distracted
  12. When worried
  13. When agitated and perturbed
  14. When moody
  15. When absorbed in an activity
  16. When sad and depressed
  17. When in fear
  18. When hungry
  19. When uncomfortable
  20. When distressed
  21. When under stress
  22. After you are fired or criticized
  23. After an unpleasant experience
  24. After a failure
  25. After making a mistake
  26. After a bitter argument
  27. After hearing bad news
  28. After watching disturbing news
  29. After a drink
  30. When feeling low
  31. When the body is weak
  32. When you are convalescing
  33. When there are too many things to handle
  34. When you are pressed for time
  35. When over-excited
  36. When lethargic and listless
  37. When disoriented
  38. When sleepy or drowsy
  39. When you are strongly identified with a position
  40. When you have insufficient knowledge on the subject being discussed
  41. After a bad day

During such times do not:

-take decisions

-give any opinion

-interpret situations

-pass judgment

-express likes and dislikes

-evaluate options

-comprehend complex subjects

-criticize

-get into arguments

If we cannot avoid taking a decision then seek counsel from a sober person

After a few days, when sober, review your decision.

When anything has serious long term consequences ask for more time and ponder over it when in a different frame of mind
